Signs of Wind Damage on Your Roof
Some wind damage is obvious. Some is not. Always get a professional inspection after a significant storm — the signs below may point to damage that needs to be documented before you contact your insurer.
Visible from Ground Level
Missing shingles or large sections completely blown off
Shingles visibly lifted, creased, or folded at edges
Missing or damaged ridge cap along the peak
Soffits blown out or hanging down
Gutters pulled away from fascia or dented
Debris on roof from nearby trees or structures
Only Visible from the Roof
Broken adhesive seal strips on shingles that look intact
Lifted shingles at rake edges and eaves
Flashing pulled away from chimney, walls, or dormers
Granule accumulation in valleys from storm impact
Cracked or displaced pipe boot flashing
Nail pops from deck movement during high wind
Why Wind Damage Often Goes Undetected
Seal Strip Failure
Shingles have a factory adhesive seal strip. Wind breaks this bond without removing the shingle. The shingle stays in place but is no longer watertight. Water enters at the next rain event — sometimes weeks later with no visible cause.
Flashing Separation
High wind creates uplift pressure that can pull metal flashing away from chimneys, walls, and valleys. Even small gaps in flashing allow gallons of water to enter during a normal rain — and the entry point is far from where it appears inside.
Why Granules Matter
Wind erosion accelerates granule loss on shingles. Granules protect the asphalt mat from UV degradation. Once the granules are gone, shingles crack, curl, and fail years ahead of schedule. This is a claim-eligible damage type even if no shingles are missing.
