1

Chimney Step & Counter Flashing

The most common leak source. Step flashing wraps each shingle course where the roof meets the chimney; counter flashing covers the step flashing into a mortar joint.

2

Wall & Headwall Flashing

Where a roof slope meets a vertical wall — at dormers, additions, or two-story transitions. Failed headwall flashing lets water run straight behind siding and into the attic.

3

Valley Flashing

Open or closed valley systems where two roof planes intersect. A cracked, lifted, or improperly woven valley is a major entry point for water during heavy rain.

Skylight Curb & Apron Flashing

Skylights require curb flashing up the sides and an apron flashing at the bottom. When seals crack or step flashing pulls away, leaks appear around the skylight frame indoors.

5

Pipe Boot Flashing

Rubber or metal boots seal plumbing vent penetrations. UV exposure cracks the rubber collar over time, allowing water to drip straight down the pipe into the attic or ceiling.

6

Drip Edge & Gutter Apron

Metal flashing at the roof edge that directs water into the gutter and protects the fascia board. Missing or rusted drip edge causes rot along eaves and ice dam damage.
