Annual Roof Maintenance Checklist for Northern Kentucky Homeowners

Your roof is your home's first line of defense. Staying ahead of maintenance — especially in Northern Kentucky's climate of hot summers, ice storms, and severe thunderstorms — can add years to your roof's life and save thousands in repairs.

Spring Checklist (March – May)

Post-Winter Inspection

  • Look for lifted or missing shingles caused by winter ice and wind
  • Check for ice dam damage — ice dams can lift shingles and allow water infiltration
  • Inspect gutters and downspouts for damage, pulling away from fascia, or clogs from winter debris
  • Clear all debris — leaves, sticks, and granules that washed into gutters over winter
  • Examine flashing around chimneys, skylights, and vents for cracks or gaps
  • Check attic for moisture — water stains on rafters or insulation signal a roof leak

After Every Spring Storm

  • Walk your property and look for displaced shingles, granules on the ground, or dented gutters
  • If you had hail: call TNT Roofing for a free post-storm inspection — hail damage isn't always visible from the ground

Summer Checklist (June – August)

  • Trim overhanging tree branches — branches scraping the roof wear away granules; falling limbs in storms cause major damage
  • Check for moss or algae growth — green or black streaks on shingles need attention before they cause rot
  • Inspect caulking around all roof penetrations
  • Ventilation check — ensure ridge vents and soffit vents are unobstructed; poor ventilation superheats your attic and degrades shingles faster
  • Gutter guards — consider installing them before fall leaf season

Fall Checklist (September – November)

This is the most important season for roof prep.

  • Clean gutters thoroughly — clogged gutters in winter cause ice dams and water backup under shingles
  • Inspect and reseal flashing before winter freeze-thaw cycles stress the seals
  • Look for cracked or curling shingles — any compromised shingles before winter WILL leak
  • Check soffit and fascia for rot or damage
  • Schedule a professional inspection — the best time to catch issues before the harsh winter season

Winter Checklist (December – February)

  • After heavy snow: If safe, remove excessive snow accumulation with a roof rake from the ground
  • Watch for ice dams forming at eave edges — a sign of heat escaping through your roof deck (attic insulation and ventilation issue)
  • Never chip ice dams yourself — you can damage shingles; call us for safe removal
  • Monitor your attic temperature — a well-ventilated attic should be close to outdoor temperature

When to Call a Professional

Don't wait if you notice:

  • Active leaks or water stains on ceilings
  • Missing or visibly damaged shingles
  • Sagging roof deck
  • Granules filling your gutters (sign of aging shingles)
  • Daylight visible through attic boards
